Homes of Hope: Building Foundations of Faith in the Bateys

In March 2022, GSHAC embarked on a mission to the Dominican Republic, a journey rooted in discovery and connection. This initial fact-finding trip paved the way for deeper engagement with local communities and their spiritual leaders. It was here that the seeds for a monumental project were sown.

Choosing Homes Over Houses

Senior Pastor Brave Laverdure and his team have always been at the forefront of identifying and fulfilling community needs. Through administrative trips, they assess local conditions, connect with pastors, and provide leadership training. It was during one such visit that the dire living conditions of two pastors came to light, moving the team to act. The decision was clear – these pastors needed homes that reflected their commitment and respect within the community.

Overcoming Challenges

Building homes in the bateys was not without its trials, particularly for the second house where poor soil conditions and rising costs posed significant challenges. With a commitment to providing not just a house but a fully functional home, complete with a septic tank, the team faced financial constraints. Yet, the determination to complete both homes never wavered.

Beyond Building – Education and Health Care

The mission in the bateys extended beyond housing. Recognizing the critical need for education, GSHAC established a primary school in October 2022, staffed by locals and wholly funded by the church. This was a response to the stark reality that many children, due to distance and weather conditions, were unable to attend school.

Plans for a technical school are underway to provide vocational skills to teenagers, particularly of Haitian descent, who often leave school early to work in sugar cane fields. This initiative aims to offer new horizons in fields like computer skills, plumbing, and electrical work.

Furthermore, GSHAC is laying the groundwork for a clinic slated to start in May 2024. This facility aims to address pressing needs like prenatal care, pediatrics, and dentistry, focusing on communities an hour away from the nearest birth facilities.

The impact was immediate-their lives were forever changed, not just in terms of comfort but in the respect and pride they now hold within their communities..

Partnerships That Make a Difference

These projects were brought to fruition in partnership with Cling International, a family organization GSHAC connected with in Haiti in 2012. Local community partnerships have also been instrumental in these efforts.

A Testament to Transformation

At the inauguration of the new homes, the pastors and their families expressed profound gratitude. The impact was immediate – their lives were forever changed, not just in terms of comfort but in the respect and pride they now hold within their communities. Once unable to host or invite people into their homes, they can now open their doors with pride.
